Over the years this Group 3 race has been the point of return for some real Spring stars and this year looks to be no different with some potential G1 performers kicking off their campaigns here.
One thing is for sure, it is going to take an effort well above Group 3 level to annex this years renewal of the Suttons Show County Quality.
The horse that best fits the profile of a potential G1 sprinter / miler in this field which is really what we are looking for is the 3yo Snitzel colt from the Peter & Paul Snowden yard Invader. He takes on the likes of Omei Sword which has been installed the early 2.30 favorite and Spectroscope from the Godolphin yard which also has big wraps on it but the 7.50 / 2.40 each way odds they are offering about Invader are just too good to pass up.
Invader put it all together last season annexing the G1 Sires Produce (didn’t run in Golden Slipper) suggesting races like the Golden Rose and Caulfield Guineas would be on the agenda and the Snowden camp might have pulled a master stroke here taking on the older horses instead of the traditional route which is full of a crop of very good 3yo colts.
Invader suggested he has returned in top order with a 1.1l trial 5th to Winx in prep for his return here and that trial was full of G1 performers and we can get a line through a few of the others out of that trial to suggest Invader has the measure of Omei Sword back through the formlines that horse produced when annexing the G2 Silver Shadow in August 2016 by 3.3l before running 2nd to Astern in the Golden Rose.
The pace scenario Invader is likely to encounter here suggests he will likely get the run of the race and get 1st run into the stretch, Omei Sword will be forced to chase it down from back off the pace under an unsuitable tempo.
From a breeding perspective Invader is superbly bred by Snitzel out of the Encosta De Lago mare Flame Of Sydney which makes it a 3/4 relation to the 4 time G1 placed Not Listen’intome. The family generally tend to train on significantly from their 2yo to 3yo season and Invader looks to be following that general family trait.
So to recap Invader shapes up as excellent each way value here. We have it rated clear on top as a 3.70 chance. It can be backed at 7.50 / 2.40 on an each way basis in Randwick R8 with a decent degree of confidence. The 2.40 Place odds is a high confidence angle to approach your betting in this race from if you are looking for a Banker Bet scenario.
